A more readily available indication of battery life is desirable, especially in a product aimed at portability. One is the single LED light on the charging case, which flashes red when charging, glows white when charged, or flashes white when pairing a second Bluetooth device (which is done by pressing the solo button inside the case while the buds are seated). Only two aspects of the build here feel a little disappointing.

If you need a little extra juice, five-minute Fast Fuel charging gives up to an hour of playback thanks to the USB-C charger. The buds offer up to eight hours of listening time (or five when active noice cancelling is switched on) with two additional charges provided by the case, totalling up to 15 hours of playtime with noise-cancelling enabled, or 24 hours of combined playback without it – a shade under class-leading, but perfectly acceptable at this level. The case is svelte, pocketable and well-finished, and the earpieces snap in easily, staying put thanks to magnets in both the case and its lid. Readers of Dwight Silverman’s excellent Release Notes newsletter will know he includes a photo of his cats to show off smartphone photography capabilities. I’d say it’s really only if you want extra features, like device switching and automatically pausing the music which the Apple H1 processor offers, that you should go for the AirPods Pro. For most people, in most situations, Beats Studio Buds will be more than good enough. There’s no denying that AirPods Pro are better, but are they so much better that they justify an extra $100 cost? I’m really not sure here. Beats have a clickable button which is easier to use.ĪirPods Pro cost $249, Beats Studio Buds $149. Both have a transparency setting as well.įor AirPods Pro, you squeeze the stem of the earbud to change from noise-cancelling to transparency, for instance. This is really excellent on both pairs, though again I think the AirPods Pro have the edge. Similarly, you don’t get the seamless device switching that AirPods Pro have when you move from iPhone to iPad, say.

One of the coolest things about AirPods from day one is their ability to know if they’re in your ears or not, and pause audio as you take them out. The naked buds: Beats Studio Buds and Apple AirPods Pro.
